Thank you for your interest in our reinterpretation of Rudi Gernreich's iconic 1964 topless maillot — also known as the "monokini". I have achieved the look of the thick woollen original design by doubling up extra heavy weight Italian lycra. The seamless front panel and rubberised straps provide the unbeatable comfort of a contemporary luxury one piece, while overall the appearance is strikingly similar to a traditional, thick woollen swimsuit.

Like Andy Warhol with his paintings of soup cans beside paintings of electric chairs, Gernreich was utterly deadpan. He took the most modest style of the day, popular with older women, and just wiped out the top, as if tops would no longer be needed. Many people didn't get it, including the editors of Playboy who asked the original model, Peggy Moffitt, to pose in the swimsuit for them. She told them to go jump, that Gernreich devised it as an expression of women's liberation, not fodder for purulent minds.

Leg Line

I minimise gaping at the rear (a standard problem with boylegs) by running tensioned rubber through the rear leg seam, then loosening the tension through the front leg for comfort. Our boy leg is slightly shorter than most, to do away with the need for any centre-back seam.

Features

  • Each piece finished and lined using twin layers of 225gsm nylon/Lycra, made in Italy from recycled waste plastic.
  • the lining behind the upper-waist seam is secured to the rubber between the two layers.

Constitution

  • Made from twin layers of "Vita" fabric from Carvico in Milan, comprising 78% Recycled Nylon and 22% Xtra Life Lycra. (See technical data from the Australian importer).
  • All threads are UV and chlorine resistant polyester from Coats in the UK.
  • For elasticity and endurance, 0.63mm thick treated latex is used throughout.
  • All metal hardware is moulded exclusively for Pride. Electrostatic rack plating contains no heavy metals, for example cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, nickel or lead.

Credits

  • Each piece individually cut and sewn in Newcastle East in Australia.
  • Design by Steven Fleming with inspiration from Rudi Gernreich.
