The Primitive Hut
Rains associated with a La Niña weather pattern in 2021 brought driftwood down the rivers, that washed onto beaches, where people made primitive huts. Past generations of architectural theorists have called it an art that begins with the body, the city, the machine or the cosmos, but probably the most convincing starting point is the one that was put forward by Marc-Antoine Laugier, in 1755.
Laugier (whose name I pronounce low-gee-air with a soft-g) said all architecture precedes from the primitive hut. The best buildings are not the ones that best riff on analogies with bodies, cities or machines. The best buildings are those that do the best job of just being buildings. Could the same be said of white swimsuits?
